Tapestry, like all wovenfabrics, is composed of awarp and a woof, but thewoof alone appears on boththe wrong and the rightside, because it must entirelycover the warp. In thehigh-warp looms the warpis composed of worsted,cotton, or silk threads, offour or five yarns twistedtogether, and it must beperfectly smooth. Whenstretched upon the rollersthe workman divides it intoleaves, which are kept apartby a thread passed altern-ately between the threadsof the warp (see a, No. 2,page 189) and by a glasstube, two or two and a halfcentimetres in diameter,called the baton de croisure(see b, No. 2). In conse-quence of this separationhalf the threads of the warpare brought in front, whilethe other half fall behind.
